8 Practical Tips for Preventing Dehydration

Thirsty?

Even mild dehydration can hurt performance

About 60% of our body is water; and every major system depends on it.

Even mild dehydration can quietly sabotage our workouts, recovery and overall health.

Here is what happens when we don’t drink enough:

Muscle strength and endurance drop:

Just a 1–2% loss of body water can reduce strength, power, and coordination. That means your workout feels harder than they should.

Our heart works overtime:

Dehydration thickens our blood slightly, forcing our hearts to pump harder to deliver oxygen to our muscles.

Focus and reaction time suffers:

Water is critical for brain function. Low hydration can lead to brain fog, slower reaction time, and reduced motivation.

By the time we feel thirsty, we’re often ALREADY DEHYDRATED. Relying only on thirst can leave us consistently under-hydrated.

Consider this: if our urine is dark in color, has a strong odor, and or we typically feel tired before and after training, dehydration may be part of the problem.

Hydration BEFORE training: set the stage

Starting a workout already dehydrated is like beginning a road trip with an empty gas tank.

Being well hydrated before training helps us to:

  • Regulate body temperature
  • Improve joint lubrication
  • Support muscle contraction and coordination
  • Reduce the risk of cramps and early fatigue

Simple rule: Sip water consistently throughout the day—don’t wait until your workout to “catch up.”

Hydration AFTER training: recovery begins here

Rehydrating after training:

  • Supports muscle repair and recovery
  • Helps replenish blood volume
  • Reduces post-workout fatigue and headaches
  • Aids nutrient transport to muscles when you eat your recovery meal

Here’s your challenge

For the next week try 1 of these:

  • Start your morning with a glass of water
  • Bring a bottle to every workout
  • Drink water before every meal
  • Add an extra glass after training
  • Use a water bottle that gets you excited and tracks your drinking
  • Use an app to remind you to drink
  • Get a water buddy (aka a friend or family member to join you in a “drink water challenge”)
  • Add fresh fruit to your water to change up the taste (if that is needed 😊)

Small habits = big performance gains.
